5 tips to inspire your next cheeseboard

Cheese boards - aren’t they just the epitome of a weekend away?

I have photographed many cheese boards at various properties across the years, because it seems that nothing says “living my best life” better than a good cheeseboard moment shared on Instagram stories.

My favourite kinds of cheese platters are those that are simple and feel casually put-together, while highlighting some fresh (and local!) produce.

Some particular cheesy arrangements that have really stuck in my head are those that I photographed, and indulged in, at Upland Farm WA, in May 2022. My client Shelley pulled together some really memorable and characterful platters.

In this article, I have gathered my thoughts on what made Shelley’s cheeseboards so special to help you plan for your next photoshoot or social gathering at home.

01. hit up the garden

Don’t we all have some sort of herb or citrus growing in the garden?

Step outside to see what is looking enticing in your veggie patch and use this on your cheese board to bring a relaxed and rustic vibe.

Think trussed cherry tomatoes with a sharp cheddar, sprigs of thyme atop a melty camembert, or some edible flowers like marigold as a perky garnish.

02. Use textural elements

Use a textural element like baking paper to sit the cheese on as a point of interest.

You could also mix and match small bowls to hold additional condiments like olives or marinated feta and its oil.

03. Have a good selection of platters to choose from

Having a variety of boards and platters to choose from when putting together your cheeseboards will keep things inspired.

Don’t restrict yourself to just wooden boards, you can use things like trays with handles or china meat platters.

Keep an eye out for vintage cheese knives at op shops and antique stores for an individual look.

04. bonus points for local produce

If you have a cheese maker nearby, then you are miles ahead! A great way to feature the region you live in (or the property being photographed) is by using local produce.

Don’t limit yourself just to cheese! Find a local wine to pair it with, as well as other local produce if you can get your hands on some.

05. Who says it needs to be cheese and a board?

Think outside of the box when you are envisioning those holiday vibes.

Consider a basket, packed with fresh bread, a thermos of soup, a blanket and apples to carry on a quick hike to a lookout.

Or maybe it is afternoon tea time on the sofa with some carrot cake or scones.
